Boca Raton, Fla. – The Molloy baseball team fell to the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 15-8, Monday afternoon at Lynn University. The Lions move to 8-7, while the Owls improve to 10-3.
How it Happened
- The Owls hung three runs in the first inning with a two home runs to lead, 3-0.
- In the bottom of the third, graduate student Jake McCarthy singled home sophomore JJ DeVito to cut the lead down to 3-1.
- In the following inning, junior Stephen Collica singled to score freshman Sean Serrano to bring Molloy within one, 3-2.
- Southern Connecticut State got one run back in the top of the fifth to regain its two-run lead, 4-2.
- In the bottom of the frame, junior Gavin McAlonie ripped a two run single into left field to knot the contest at four.
- The road team totaled four runs in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead, 8-4.
- In the bottom half of the sixth, Collica belted his first career home run over the left center field fence to bring the Lions within three, 8-5.
- Collica continued to stay hot at the plate in the seventh, ripping a two RBI double down the left field line to cut the deficit to one, 8-7.
- The Owls put together a seven-run eighth inning to take a commanding 15-7 lead.
- Junior Garrett Scavelli blasted a home run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 15-8, but the Lions would not come any closer as Southern Connecticut would go on to win, 15-8.
Top Performances
- Collica paced the team with three hits and four RBIs, just missing a triple to hit for the cycle.
- McAlonie drove in two runs and picked up two hits.
- Scavelli hit his first home run of the season while tallying two hits.
- McCarthy and Serrano totaled two hits each.
