Baseball Defeats Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-3

West Palm Beach, Fla. – In the final game of its Florida trip, the Molloy baseball team defeated the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University, 6-3, Tuesday afternoon. Molloy improves to 9-7 with the win, while the Sailfish move to 11-11.

How it Happened

  • A lead off single from sophomore JJ DeVito and a walk from junior Garrett Scavelli had Molloy in business in the first.
  • While executing a double steal, DeVito stole third and scored following an overthrow to put the Lions in front, 1-0.
  • The cardinal and white pushed ahead, 3-0, in the fifth. DeVito singled home graduate student Robby Keane and then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Gavin McAlonie.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic got one back in the bottom of the frame with an RBI groundout to shorten to the lead to 3-1 after five innings of play.
  • The Lions reclaimed its three-run lead in the sixth, DeVito grounded out to score graduate student Chris Peralta to go ahead, 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Sailfish had the tying run at the plate with runners on first and third, but freshman Sean Welsh induced an inning ending double play to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
  • Molloy continued its offense in the seventh, Peralta doubled to score junior Aidan Larkin and sophomore Tom Lebrecht scored Peralta with an RBI single to extend the lead to 6-1.
  • The home team got back two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead in half, 6-3.
  • The Sailfish threatened in the bottom of the eighth with two runners on and the tying run at the plate, but a diving inning ending catch from Scavelli in center field prevented the home team from scoring.
  • Senior AJ Verga retired the side in order in the ninth to clinch the victory, 6-3.

  • Scavelli led the team with three hits.
  • DeVito collected two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Peralta totaled two hits and one RBI.
