Softball Topped at #15 Adelphi

Garden City, N.Y. - After a stretch of nine days without games, the softball team returned to action at local rival and nationally-ranked #15 Adelphi University, falling to the Panthers, 5-1 and 3-1. Molloy sits at 23-14 after the contests while Adelphi improved to 35-6.

Game One: Adelphi 5, Molloy 1

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers plated two runs on a double from Tierney Fitzgerald.
  • The Lions fell victim to strikeout phenom Lindsey Hibbs, recording its first base runner in the fourth inning on an infield single from graduate student Alex Burns.
  • Molloy had a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning on singles from freshman Mae Savage and junior Chrissie Huhn before getting on the board in the sixth inning.
  • A single from senior Steph Conrade, a fielding error, and fielder's choice bunt set freshman Emily McGurkup for a sacrifice fly after a marathon battle against Hibbs to cut the deficit to one run.
  • The Panthers responded by scoring three runs on four hits in the home half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Hibbs retired the final three Lions in order for the victory.

Game Two: Adelphi 3, Molloy 1

  • A leadoff walk in the first inning set the Panthers up for an RBI single from Courtney Wengryn to take a 1-0 lead to start the contest.
  • The lead would double in the third on a center field double from Brianna Fischer.
  • An outfield single from Huhn and back-to-back fielder's choices from Savage and sophomore Natalie Moussaallowed a run to score for the Lions on the bat of junior Katie Hand via sacrifice fly.
  • Wengryn picked up her second RBI of the contest in the fifth inning, adding an insurance run with an infield ground out.
  • Lead off singles from Burns and senior Steph Conrade gave hope for a seventh inning comeback, but it was not to be, as the Panthers recorded the final three outs in succession to complete the sweep.
