Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team remained unbeaten in conference play, defeating the Wildcats of Daemen University, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 7-2-5 overall and 5-0-1 in ECC play, while the Wildcats fell to 4-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.
How it Happened
- 87 seconds into the contest, sophomore Matt Laya-Vetell generated a scoring chance but sent his shot wide.
- In this 12th minute, junior Danny Muir had a shot from point blank range, but his attempt was saved by Daemen goalkeeper Marcos Lerma Escobar.
- Daemen created a pair of chances in the 18th and 20th minute, but both of their shots did not force a save.
- The Lions broke through in the 33rd minute, sophomore Gio Fabiano had his shot saved, but junior Ryan Dobson cleaned it up with a header that went into the back of the net to put Molloy ahead, 1-0.
- Molloy looked to add onto its lead as junior Edwin Castellon fired a shot that was saved away in the 40th minute, Molloy led, 1-0, going into halftime.
- Fabiano opened the second half with a shot that was saved.
- In the 59th minute, Daemen looked to tie the contest, but graduate student Nick Conklu denied the opportunity.
- Defense dominated the next 12 minutes of action, as neither team was able to create a scoring chance.
- Senior J.P. Rodriguez blasted a left footed shot that rang off the crossbar in the 73rd minute.
- Molloy increased its lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute. Rodriguez sent a shot that was saved, and Fabiano took the rebound and scored with a header.
- The Lions would go on to secure the victory, 2-0.
- The team honored its seven seniors Danny Muir, Matthais Adamek, J.P. Rodriguez, Jonas Jacobsen, Dennis Mejia, Nick Conklu, and Orlando Zambrano Jr. in a pre-game ceremony.
