WALTHAM, Mass. – The Queens College men's
tennis team, ranked No. 26 in the most-recent
Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II
national poll, won its first-round NCAA Division II Championship
match Monday afternoon at Bentley University, as the second-seeded
Knights (19-5) took out seventh-seeded University of the Sciences
(9-8) by a 5-0 decision in East Region play.
Queens advances to Tuesday's second-round, where it will face host
and third-seeded Bentley (a 5-0 winner versus Southern New
Hampshire on Monday) in a 12 noon first serve. The winner of that
match will advance to the Round of 16, May 11 at Altamonte Springs,
Fla.
The Knights took all three doubles points to open up the afternoon,
including: an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 flight by East Coast
Conference Player of the Year, Atilla Toth and Nikolaj Wulff
(versus Francisco Garcia and Alvaro Vargas); an 8-1 triumph by
Fabio Minami and Andre Pellegrino at No. 2 (vs. Bill Fine and Josh
Garcia); and an 8-love win at No. 3 by Diego Medrano and David
Burstein (over Roger Van Scyoc and Paul Bedway).
Toth, ranked No. 29 in singled play in the most-recent
Campbell's/ITA poll, and Medrano (ranked No. 15 in the East Region)
recorded identical 6-love, 6-love wins at the No. 1 (Vargas) and
No. 3 (Fine) flights, respectively, to seal the match for Queens.
Burstein and Pellegrino were up 6-love, 5-love in their No. 5 and 6
singles matches before team play was halted.
