PERFECTION - No. 1 C.W. Post Women's Lacrosse Caps Undefeated Season With 15-7 Victory vs. No. 3 West Chester for National Championship
May 13, 2007

SALEM, Va. (May 13, 2007) - The C.W. Post women's lacrosse team took the field 17 times in the 2007 campaign, and Sunday afternoon at Spartan Field the Pioneers etched their names in the record books as "perfect," as the top-ranked squad downed No. 3 West Chester, 15-7, to capture the 2007 NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship.

C.W. Post finishes the season with an unblemished mark of 17-0, and becomes just the second team in Division II history to complete an undefeated season (Stonehill, 2005). The title is the second in school history for the Pioneers, as head coach Karen MacCrate Henning led her team to the inaugural championship in 2001.

Following the contest, five C.W. Post players were recognized on the All-Tournament Team, including junior All-America midfielder Mallory Poole, who was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by senior attacker Shannon Fabian, senior defender Lindsay Goldman, sophomore defender Jesse Wolff and junior goalkeeper Lauren Scipione.

"The whole weekend, we had different people stepping up at different times," commented MacCrate Henning about the championship. "The seniors put it all out there. They have been wanting to get here for four years, and I'm so proud of them."

The Pioneers scored the first three goals of the game, with Fabian (5 g, 3 a) setting up sophomore Jaclyn Napoli (3 g, 1 a, 2 dc, 2 ct) for the opening tally 1:56 into the contest. Senior Lauren LoMonaco (4 gb, 3 dc, 3 ct) and Poole (4 g, 2 dc) followed with goals at the 19:49 and 14:19 marks, respectively, before West Chester (19-2) got on the scoreboard with 12:29 to go on Jackie Baker's free-position shot. Katie Crouse pulled the Golden Rams to within a goal less than six minutes later, before Poole scored a momentum-changing goal with 15 seconds remaining in the half to give her team a 4-2 halftime advantage.

The momentum from Poole's half-ending tally seemed to spark C.W. Post, as Fabian and Poole scored in the first 72 seconds of the second half to push the Pioneers' advantage to four goals. Baker scored for WCU with 27:25 remaining in the half, before Napoli (from Fabian) and Fabian (from freshman Brianne Jackolski) scored at 25:01 and 24:23, respectively, to push the C.W. Post edge to 8-3.

Following Christy Kane's first of four second-half goals with 22:53 remaining, the Pioneers put the game out of reach with a sensational 6-0 run, to go up by a 14-4 count with 8:17 remaining. Fabian scored twice and added an assist in the rally, while Napoli (one assist in the run), Elaine Williams, Poole and senior Colleen Agostinacchio (1 g, 1 a) also dented the nylon during that stretch.

Kane scored three goals in the final six minutes for West Chester, including a pair in the last 1:03, while Fabian rounded out her illustrious career with a free-position goal with 2:53 to go. She ends her career third on the Division II all-time scoring list (345 points; 152 goals, 193 assists), second on the school's all-time scoring list (Trisha Moran, 2001-04; 346 points), and as the NCAA's career and single-season (71, in 2006) assists leader.

For as exceptional as the offense played against the Golden Rams, the C.W. Post defense deserves just as much praise. The Pioneers held the nation's leading scorer, Stephanie Kienle, off the scoresheet for the first time in the last 43 games. C.W. Post also forced 23 West Chester turnovers (14 caused), and held a sizeable 21-11 edge in ground balls. The Golden Rams were only able to clear the ball at a 4-for-9 clip in the second half, leading to transition goals by the Pioneers.

Scipione made eight saves in her 57:20 of action, including seven in the first half, before giving way to Ann Denning (one save, two goals against) for the final 2:40 of action. In total, all 24 players in uniform for C.W. Post took the field in the championship game.
