Old Westbury, N.Y. - The No. 3 Adelphi women's lacrosse team topped top-ranked C.W. Post, 7-4, Friday afternoon to clinch the East Coast Conference regular season title. The Panthers improve to 16-0 while snapping the Pioneers (15-1) win streak at 32.
In a defensive battle that held both teams scoreless through the first 11 mintues of play, freshman Michelle Ceraso broke through the pack to tally the first of her three goals at 19:00. It took ten minutes for the Panthers to score again as junior Rachel Ray found the back of the net at 9:28, spurring a 3-0 run. Freshman Kaitlyn Carter pushed the lead to 3-0 at 5:06. Sophomore Vanessa Sotcheff scored on a feed by Ray wtih 3:52 left in the half for a 4-0 half-time cushion.
The Pioneers, which average 10.7 ppg in the first half, were held scoreless through the first 30 minutes of play thanks to stellar defense by the Panthers and sophomore netminder Caitlin Fitzpatrick who made three stops. She finished the game with seven saves.
Adelphi continued its rally in the second half with sophomore Allison Tumulty scoring the eventual game-winner at 26:54 on a free position shot. Ceraso accounted for the final two Panther goals at 14:09 and again at 9:36 with help from Ray.
The Pioneers finally got on board with 7:20 left in regulation as Katie Hogan scored on an assist from Elaine Williams. Williams added back to back goals with less than 3:30 to play, both assisted by Hogan. Staci Passafiume closed the margin to three, 7-4, as time ran out.
Adelphi improves its overall record versus C.W. Post to 4-6 and are 2-0 against the Pioneers in the NCAA Championships.
The Panthers remain the only undefeated Division II team and look to extend their win streak as they gear up for the NCAA DII Championships. The NCAA selection show takes place on Sunday, May 4.
